Synopsis:

A divorced doctor undergoes a sexual awakening and delves into the world of online kink in hopes of finding her perfect BDSM partner in POLARITY.

Dr. Sara Jane Spencer has recovered from her second divorce and is on the hunt for her next great romance. This time, though, she’s not willing to settle for a vanilla love life. If she wants to fulfill her darkest desires, Sara Jane will need to find a man that can introduce her to the kinky world of BDSM. But finding a good dom isn’t an easy task, and when it comes to online dating things are always bound to go wrong before they go right.

POLARITY is a well-rounded, emotionally charged novel. Its story is centered around a series of sexual encounters “Southern Lady” Sara Jane experiences during her search for the perfect kinky lover. Some of those experiences are funny (like the spam messages Sara Jane receives from a man she later dubs “InstaDom”). Others are darker and involve men that push Sara Jane’s boundaries beyond their limits. POLARITY is well-balanced; it knows when to make you laugh, when to make you cringe, and when to make you cry.

POLARITY is fiction. However, Virginia Ford’s writing style lends it the tone of a memoir. Sara Jane is a witty narrator. She shares her feelings with the reader and has a lot of character depth. The use of messages and instant messenger conversations makes it feel like the reader is getting a glimpse into the private life of a friend. Sarah Jane’s conflicting feelings of shame and pleasure and her questioning, cerebral approach to her sexuality matches her doctor persona. She’s a very attractive character for readers to explore new worlds with.

Not only is POLARITY fun to read, but the information about BDSM featured in POLARITY is also accurate and knowledgeable. It talks about key concepts of BDSM, like safe words, collaring, and rules of etiquette. Sara Jane’s experiences are good cautionary tales. The resources Sara Jane uses to find her partners (The Cage, Tumblr, FetLife, etc.) are real life websites. It’s not a how-to guide for BDSM, but it will point those that are curious in the right direction.

POLARITY is an exploration of sexuality that is both alluringly sensual and charmingly educational.  Any reader looking to take a walk on the wild side will find POLARITY’S humorous (yet earnest) tone captivating. POLARITY is provocative in all the right ways, and it will leave readers wanting to read more stories from Sara Jane’s new lifestyle.

Sarah Jane’s story might be fictional, but Virginia Ford’s knowledge is not. POLARITY’s witty, emotionally-driven prose and its insights into the kinky side of modern dating culture make it the perfect story for any reader that has ever wondered what it would feel like to explore the “secret garden” that is BDSM.

“A much-needed dose of mostly realistic possibilities in the world of D/s. This book also addresses how inexperience and misconceptions can actually hurt participants rather than enhance lives. Fantastic read!”

“It’s a learning experience.”
